The Fort Restaurant & Hospitality Complex

The Fort Restaurant & Hospitality Complex

MMD proposed a design concept for the Al Maqta’a premium Restaurant & Hospitality Complex, located in Abu Dhabi’s heritage area, adjacent to the iconic Al Maqta’a historical Fort and the Sheikh Zayed Bridge by Zaha Hadid. MMD’s design seamlessly blends Emirati architectural identity with modern aesthetics and innovative dining experiences, while prioritizing sustainability in all project materials.

The design vision for this premium restaurant pays tribute to the cultural heritage of the Abu Dhabi Emirate by blending traditional elements with contemporary design. Drawing inspiration from the Manama, traditional Emirati outdoor sleeping platforms used until the early 1960s, the restaurant’s architecture mimics their suspended wood structures. These platforms, elevated up to 2 meters from the ground, provided protection from snakes and insects while allowing air circulation for natural cooling. Similarly, our restaurant creates the appearance of being suspended, with 80% of its spaces elevated to the first floor, offering an expansive outdoor dining and play area shaded by the floor slab above. The ground floor serves as a welcoming reception area, while the raised spaces echo the functionality and aesthetic of the Manama.

This design not only pays homage to the Manama’s practical purpose but also creates a unique dining experience, allowing guests to dine outdoors while being sheltered from the elements. The architectural silhouette of the restaurant draws inspiration from the iconic Al Jahili Fort towers in Al Ain, with modern touches that give the structure a contemporary twist. Triangular windows, reminiscent of the fort’s design, are complemented by mahogany wood finishes and traditional wicker weavers, which serve as openable screens for natural ventilation. These finishes evoke the warmth and richness of Emirati elegance and sophistication, while the wicker elements add a layer of authenticity.

As guests enter the restaurant, they are transported to a space where history and modernity converge. The thoughtful combination of traditional architectural references and modern design ensures a dining experience that is both immersive and unforgettable.

In addition to its indoor and outdoor dining areas, the restaurant features a chef’s academy for culinary classes, two luxury event halls, and an immersive dining experience—the first of its kind in the MENA region. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the cultural and architectural landscape of the area.

Spanning a plot of 73,000 sqm, the restaurant is set to become a landmark destination, offering unparalleled dining experiences while honoring the rich heritage and historical significance of its surroundings.
