The Al Khobar Strip Mall – Unbuilt Concept

The Al Khobar Strip Mall – Unbuilt Concept

Michael Marshall Design (MMD) developed this conceptual vision for a dynamic mixed-use development in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, known as The Strip Mall. This early design scheme explored the integration of contemporary architectural expression with deep cultural heritage, aiming to create a destination that blends retail, dining, and office functions within a vibrant public realm.

Although this particular version was not selected for construction, it played a key role in the design dialogue with the client and contributed to the evolution of the final built scheme.

Key Features of the Concept Design:

  • Shopping & Dining:
Two rows along the main road offer a vibrant and unique shopping and outdoor dining experience.
  • Parametric Pavilions:
Three eye-catching, modern pavilions in the front row create inviting spaces for outdoor dining.
  • Central Plaza:
A lush central plaza, featuring a waterfall, serves as a communal oasis for relaxation and community engagement.
  • Office Spaces:
Adjacent office buildings include a five-story structure connected by a bridge, and a two-story building featuring a rooftop garden and a 3D screen.

The concept draws from regional architectural language—modern screens shaped like desert dunes provide shade and privacy, while connecting visually to the surrounding natural landscape. Traditional Rawashin wooden latticework was integrated into the façades, merging heritage motifs with modern geometries.

The project’s color palette reflects the warm, earthy tones of Saudi Arabia’s desert terrain, enhancing contextual relevance. Sustainability was also a key consideration, with the use of Areesh wooden sheds for passive shading and emphasis on natural, locally resonant materials.

Design Intent (Concept Phase):

To propose a culturally grounded yet forward-looking urban destination—one that activates the public realm and offers a sophisticated blend of commerce, leisure, and workspace, all embedded in a narrative of place and identity.
