The Palm Fronds Restaurant & Hospitality Complex

The Palm Fronds Restaurant & Hospitality Complex

MMD proposed a design concept for the Al Maqta’a premium restaurant, located in Abu Dhabi’s heritage area, adjacent to the iconic Al Maqta’a historical Fort and the Sheikh Zayed Bridge by Zaha Hadid. MMD’s design seamlessly blends Emirati architectural identity with modern aesthetics and innovative dining experiences, while prioritizing sustainability in all project materials.

The concept initiated with a metaphorical approach, as the form of a palm branch one of the truest signs of peace and hospitality that is richly significant in UAE culture. By using this imagery in the composition of the form of our concept designs, we tap into the true essence of Emirates design in a way that is more unique and original than simply copying traditional architecture. This is our way of responding to today’s needs for an architecture that respects the past but also looks forward to tomorrow’s Interpretation of the spirit of the UAE and Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Rising above the landscape, the design echoes the palm: its glass and steel form a canopy-like façade, with green walls and natural cooling systems embodying the leaf's elegance and efficiency. Inside, light and shadow interplay across sustainable interiors, capturing the essence of harmony between built and natural environments, a tribute to the palm's timeless grace with modern building systems. The symbolism here is both literal and metaphorical. The patina copper roofing material harkens to an ancient and aged material but is administered in a truly modern fashion, looking to the future of Abu Dhabi as a world tourist destination significant of its position as a regional leader.

In addition to its indoor and outdoor dining areas, the restaurant features a chef’s academy for culinary classes, two luxury event halls, and an immersive dining experience—the first of its kind in the MENA region. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the cultural and architectural landscape of the area.

Spanning a plot of 73,000 sqm, the restaurant is set to become a landmark destination, offering unparalleled dining experiences while honoring the rich heritage and historical significance of its surroundings.
