MMD is the architect for a large-scale addition and modernization for a charter school in North Plainfield, New Jersey. The project, completed in 2019, is a two-story addition (plus basement) to an existing school, measuring approximately 35,500 square feet. The design respects the existing historic building through scale and material providing value to the adjacent community by developing a flexible environment for learning as a neighborhood amenity. The new addition will complement the interior and exterior character of the existing structure with a contemporary look.
The project consists of a mix of academic and artistic programs. The project hosts a total of 21 classrooms, 2 science/lab rooms, a new art, music and drama room, a new cafeteria and a full-size indoor basketball court, which also serves for other school and community activities. The multipurpose room includes a large framed picture window overlooking Jackson Avenue, giving the structure a signature look while providing an abundance of natural light to account for the versatility of the school’s needs.
The mission of the College Achieve Central Charter School system is to prepare all of its students to excel and to move on and graduate from the top universities in the nation.
