For the new MGM National Harbor resort, MMD was commissioned to design the National Market, a vibrant and dynamic culinary destination within the resort. This ambitious project went beyond designing the physical space; MMD's branding team also crafted unique concept designs for an array of culinary offerings. Inspired by the lively ambiance of outdoor urban markets, the National Market was envisioned as a melting pot of tastes, spices, and diverse culinary experiences. The goal was to create an authentic yet casual setting that would transport guests to an epicenter of good eats and cultural exploration.

MMD's approach to the National Market was rooted in the idea of creating a rich tapestry of dining experiences, each with its own distinct identity. This involved developing ten unique brand identities, each reflecting the character and culinary focus of its respective culinary tradition. From vibrant street food stalls to sophisticated gourmet counters, each concept was meticulously designed to offer a unique and memorable experience.

Although these concepts were ultimately not implemented, the brainstorming during the proposal phase was crucial in aligning MMD's vision with that of MGM Grand. These sessions facilitated open communication and the exchange of ideas among all stakeholders, ensuring the final design met everyone's expectations. Additionally, this collaborative process allowed the client to envision future dining options without being constrained by specific tenants. This approach enabled the client to focus on the adaptability of the space itself rather than on brand partnerships, providing a strategic advantage in planning which cuisines to feature. By prioritizing flexibility, the brainstorming sessions gave the client a clear direction on how to approach and evolve the culinary offerings within the market, setting a strong foundation for future development.
