KID Museum Environmental Graphics

KID Museum Environmental Graphics

The KID Museum is our region’s pioneering experiential museum and educational makerspace, empowering the next generation with the skills to invent the future. The non-profit celebrated the opening of its newly designed flagship location in spring of 2022. The new metro-accessible location will deliver engaging, hands-on experiences for kids, families, and educators through transformational, project-based activities in coding, robotics, electronics, textiles, woodworking, 3D printing, and more. Expected to serve over 500,000 visitors over the next 5 years, the KID Museum will be the largest center for maker learning for kids nationally.

In addition to designing, planning, and developing KID Museum’s new 28,000 sq ft flagship facility, MMD was commissioned to help brand the space by designing and coordinating a series of environmental graphics. Within the large space are three material studios that host a series of daily classes and workshops.  It was critical to make these activities feel accessible and inviting at all times. The three studios were designed with glass partitions, but needed a clear visual barrier to protect younger visitors. MMD created a modular shape system, inspired by the museum's most popular construction methods, to clearly delineate the perimeter of each of the spaces. The careful and methodical play of the shapes inspires a sense of building, movement and  interaction.

MMD prepared environmental graphics for the main fabrication space, workshops, activity rooms, and offices. With its newly designed and branded facility, the KID Museum will offer school programs, after school workshops, and summer camp sessions with activities designed and led by professional maker educators in an evocative and contemporary space, carefully engineered to inspire creativity and innovation for all of its visitors.
