DCPS Redesign - Playbook 2023

MMD was engaged to continue its collaboration with the DCPS Design Lab team, contributing to the next iteration of the DCPS Redesign Playbook. Originally published in 2020, the “Transformation by Design Playbook” served as a case study, documenting years of rigorous work to create a replicable model—a guide schools across the District and beyond could adopt in their redesign efforts.

For this year’s publication, the team sought to preserve the celebrated design and format of the previous version while refocusing the content to reflect an expanded vision. With the DCPS Design Lab’s recent partnership with the XQ Institute, their efforts have grown significantly, engaging more schools and students than ever. Students were invited to share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas directly with decision-makers—ensuring their voices played a central role in shaping the curriculums and programs that would impact their education. Thus, “Redesigning with Students: A Playbook for Success” was born.

This latest edition emphasizes the power of student involvement and its ability to drive meaningful change in education. The design objective was clear: make student voices intrinsic to the visual narrative and celebrate their participation. Through close collaboration with the DCPS Design Lab team, MMD developed multiple opportunities to spotlight students, including direct quotes, “Meet a Student Designer” profiles, and dedicated sections showcasing student-led initiatives. Every element of the Playbook was intentionally crafted to reinforce the central theme of student co-creation.

Beyond the visual execution, MMD played a key role in content structuring, ensuring that the Playbook was engaging and practical for educators and administrators looking to implement student-driven redesign strategies. Additionally, responding to a key feature request for this scope of work, MMD designed a complementary PDF reader app, enhancing the Playbook’s accessibility and interactivity.

The result is a visually rich, student-centered, and highly interactive Playbook that documents the transformative work of DCPS and XQ Institute and empowers schools nationwide to reimagine education with and for students.
