DC’s Horace Mann Elementary School Achieves LEED Gold

Marshall Moya is pleased to announce that Horace Mann Elementary School has achieved LEED GOLD certification.  The firm’s colleagues and partners on this facility, including DC Public Schools, DGS, Skanska, Setty & Associates, Bradley Site Design, Polysonics, ReStl Designers, and Delon Hampton & Associates worked very hard to ensure this would be a unique and compelling project. The scope included a 17,000 sq. ft. modernization and 33,000 sq. ft. addition. The design facilitates both indoor and outdoor instructional spaces, creating a flexible and dynamic setting for learning. Communal spaces open to the hallways and street; the transparency is a critical component of the school’s Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy.  A green wall in the lobby, and rooftop pavilion allowing for urban gardening; are two of the most distinctive features of the space. The project won a NOMA Design Excellence Award and a 2017 “Best Project” ENR MidAtlantic Award.
