Michael Marshall Design (MMD) designeda dynamic mixed-use development in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, known as The StripMall. This thoughtfully designed space merges contemporary aesthetics with adeep respect for local cultural heritage, resulting in a unique destinationthat integrates shopping, dining, and office spaces.

Key Features:

  • Shopping & Dining:     Two rows along the main road offer a vibrant and unique shopping and outdoor dining experience.
  • Parametric Pavilions:     Three eye-catching, modern pavilions in the front row create inviting spaces for outdoor dining.
  • Central Plaza:     A lush central plaza, featuring a waterfall, serves as a communal oasis for relaxation and community engagement.
  • Office Spaces:     Adjacent office buildings include a five-story structure connected by a bridge, and a two-story building featuring a rooftop garden and a 3D screen.

The design incorporates elements inspired by local culture and traditions, such as modern screens shaped like desert dunes, offering shade and privacy while connecting to nature. Traditional Rawashin wooden latticework is integrated into the façade, blending heritage with modern design. The project’s color scheme is drawn from the surrounding desert landscape, using warm, earthy tones to echo Saudi Arabia’s sands and mountains.

The design emphasizes sustainability, including wooden Areesh sheds for functional shading and natural materials, enhancing the project’s connection to both culture and environment.

Design Aim: To create a welcoming, upscale communal space that enriches the urban fabric and serves as a destination for shoppers, diners, and office occupants.
