MMD was invited to submit a proposal to the Johns Hopkins University East Baltimore Campus for the design of a new building adjacent to an historic structure.  MMD has extensive experience working on historic projects in urban settings using contemporary architectural interventions as counterpoint and in deference to the historic fabric of the neighborhood and historic structure. We achieve this balance between the “New and the Old” through informal and formal meetings with the various regulatory agencies and stakeholders.

This concept depicts the MMD philosophy of how contemporary architecture can relate to historic buildings in support and in deference to historic context. The light touch and gentile connection to the historic building is evident in set back with the addition of this transparent glazed building as a counterpoint to the weight and substantial mass of the brick façade.
