MMD is the architect for renovations to the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, at 500 Indiana Avenue, NW — a courthouse of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. As designers we appreciate the need for the correct execution and construction of our judicial environments for fair and proper uses for all whose right is to have their day in court.
As architects for the renovation of the third floor West Wing Courtrooms, MMD has participated through a collaboration with Cooper Building as a design build process of delivery for this assignment. The charge was to duplicate the previous renovation of the 2nd floor West Wing renovation, providing services that would bring the design documents up to current code and to find specifications, finishes, equipment and fixtures to replace past specified items that are no longer available in today’s marketplace. The MMD architecture team was also assigned the task of delivering ADA accessible spaces via ramps in lieu of the previously specified chair lifts.
Beyond the third floor renovations, the scope of work expanded for the MMD team to redesign the juror's lounge and the traffic court spaces on the building's ground floor. In addition to upgrading specifications, finishes and materials, the renovation to the spaces is bringing state-of-the-art technology to this independent agency of the District of Columbia government.
