DC Public Schools Language Access Guide

DC Public Schools Language Access Guide

In 2021, MMD branding was proud to work with DC Public Schools to design and produce a guide for staff and administrators across the school system. The purpose of the guide was to inform and educate staff on policies, procedures and resources for families and students for whom English is a second language. The guide provides tips for staff on communicating with DCPS families that have limited English proficiency. The colorful guide was designed with tabs for quick and easy access to information. A bright color palette and clean design ensures all critical information included is easily understood and accessible.

In accordance with the DC Language Access Act, DCPS is required to create linguistically inclusive environments and to remove language barriers when communicating with families, which includes: ensuring “vital” documents are available in the top non-English languages in DCPS providing interpretation services in any recognized language where an individual requests interpretation to access or participate in DCPS services, programs, or activities (e.g. when communicating with school officials at parent-teacher conferences and IEP meetings) and arranging for interpretation at public events where a significant number of LEP families is expected; and displaying the Language ID Poster in schools’ areas that are frequented by families (ex: front desks, main offices, parent centers, etc.), to inform them that no-cost interpretation is available to them.

"At DCPS, we believe that engaged families are crucial partners in supporting our students’ success. Linguistically and culturally diverse families are no exception and we know that one of the most effective ways to strengthen home-school partnerships is to break down language barriers." - DCPS Messaging
