string(956) "Transformation By Design is a case study and a summation of years’ worth of work pioneered by DCPS’s Design Lab. The intent is that this becomes a “playbook” for all schools that follow. MMD was challenged to concisely and visually explain how this gigantic initiative unfolded, and lay out the tools necessary to repeat it. However, the document needed to convey the human element, and demonstrate a collaborative process throughout. The creative team understood the audience: students and families interested in bringing change to their schools; and proposed a visual language that would feel inviting and handcrafted; yet insightful and professional. The team landed on a combination of hand-drawn journal elements and typical institutional typography and organization. This perfect marriage of imperfect notes, drawings, quotes and images interspersed across a serious and factual document perfectly captured the original design intent.

MMD was hired to take part of a groundbreaking initiative within DCPS: to redefine the relationship between the school system and the communities it serves.
They would do just that by creating a community-driven design process by the name of: Redesign. Redesign consists of a thorough school improvement effort that learns from the past and folds in community from the onset. The program is centered around a more equitable and inclusive approach, which not only invites students and school staff to participate, but incentivizes them to become critical collaborators. Through a rigorous process of training, conceptualization, community census and implementation; Redesign has defined a new way of transforming schools.

Transformation By Design is a case study and a summation of years’ worth of work pioneered by DCPS’s Design Lab. The intent is that this becomes a “playbook” for all schools that follow. MMD was challenged to concisely and visually explain how this gigantic initiative unfolded, and lay out the tools necessary to repeat it. However, the document needed to convey the human element, and demonstrate a collaborative process throughout. The creative team understood the audience: students and families interested in bringing change to their schools; and proposed a visual language that would feel inviting and handcrafted; yet insightful and professional. The team landed on a combination of hand-drawn journal elements and typical institutional typography and organization. This perfect marriage of imperfect notes, drawings, quotes and images interspersed across a serious and factual document perfectly captured the original design intent.
This document is more than a book; it’s a guide to repeating the same practices that resulted in increases in family engagement, enrollment projections, and student engagement in both participating schools.
MMD was responsible for the voice and visual language of the 54-page playbook, in addition to creating necessary infographics and other visual elements across the publication. In addition to defining the aesthetic, MMD worked closely with the Design Lab to propose organizational solutions and strategies to make the final piece as inviting and intuitive as possible.
