MMD Part of Development Team Selected for Northwest One Project

The team led by MRP Realty has been selected by the District to redevelop Northwest One, the 3.5 acre site located at K and North Capitol Streets, NW.  MRP Realty, teaming with CSG Urban, will build 517 affordable residential units and 255 market-rate units at the site. The team includes MMD as Architect.

This project is part of the New Communities Initiative, a District of Columbia government program which was launched to support “vibrant mixed-income neighborhoods that address both the physical architecture and human capital needs, where residents have quality affordable housing options, economic opportunities and access to appropriate human services.”  Northwest One is one of four neighborhoods in the District included in this initiative, which was created as a response to federal budget cuts to housing revitalization programs.

The DC government held community meetings prior to receiving proposals, where residents expressed a desire for family-sized units and retail amenities.  The designation of community space was also a key component of the winning proposal.

“I am honored to be part of the development that will bring affordable housing to Northwest One. As a native Washingtonian, DC business owner and resident, I consider it a true privilege to be part of the renaissance of our city,” said architect and Design Principal Michael Marshall. Marshall was part of the design team that first began looking at redevelopment of this site ten years ago, and is elated to see the process come full circle.

Michael Marshall and his firm have designed a number of projects in the District, including The Howard Theatre, Chuck Brown Memorial, Reunion Square, the University of the District of Columbia Student Center and a number of elementary schools throughout the city.

The firm is currently working on the new Entertainment and Sports Arena in Congress Heights, and the new headquarters for Bread for the City, as well as projects along the east coast – with clients MGM Resorts International and College Achieve Central Charter Schools.
